DESCRIPTION:## Overview\n\nExperiments designed to quantify gene expression
often yield hundreds of genes that exhibit statistically significant diff
erences between groups of interest. After identifying differentially expre
ssed genes\, enrichment analysis (EA) methods can be used to explore the b
iological functions associated with them. These methods allow us to identi
fy groups of genes (e.g.\, grouped into pathways) that are overrepresented
\, thereby offering insights into biological mechanisms. Gene Set Enrichme
nt Analysis (GSEA) is one of the EA methods frequently used for high-throu
ghput gene expression data analysis. This course will cover GSEA and alter
native enrichment methods. Because GSEA implementation is directly linked
to databases that annotate gene function in cells\, the course will also p
rovide an overview of functional annotation databases\, such as Gene Ontol
ogy. All course materials are available on the [GitHub course web page](ht
 tps://sib-swiss.github.io/enrichment-analysis-training/).\n\n## Audience\n
\nThis course is designed for PhD students\, postdoctoral and other resear
chers in the life sciences from both academia and industry who are eager t
o perform functional annotation of a set of differentially expressed genes
.\n\n## Learning outcomes\n\nAt the end of the course\, the participants s
hould be able to:\n\n* **Distinguish** available enrichment analysis metho
d\n* **Apply** overrepresentation and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis methods
using R\n* **Determine** whether the genes of a Gene Ontology term have a
statistically significant difference in expression or not\n* **Find** gen
e sets in databases (e.g. KEGG\, oncogenic gene sets) and use them in R\n\
 n## Prerequisites\n\n### Knowledge / competencies\n\nThis course is part o
 f the [Omics Data Analysis](https://www.sib.swiss/training/learning-paths?
path=omics-data-analysis) learning path. To get the most out of this cours
e\, you should meet the learning outcomes of [First Steps with R in Life S
 ciences](https://www.sib.swiss/training/course/FSWRR) or [Introduction to
Statistics and Data Visualisation with R](https://www.sib.swiss/training/c
