Introduction to Statistics
This course provides students with a sound introduction to statistical principles and methods with an emphasis on conceptual understanding rather than learning formulas and a cookbook approach of statistical tests. The course includes introductory statistical techniques including core descriptive and inferential concepts for a strong foundation grounding for learning statistical modelling approaches to research.
The course will present diverse methods of analysis including comparing groups, regression, mediation and moderation, as variants of the single underlying strategy of fitting a linear model to data and the generalised linear model for categorical data. Emphasis will be on selecting an appropriate form of analysis for a given research design and the interpretation and communication of results.
Learners are also introduced to computer-based statistical software exploration and analysis using real-life examples from psychology and psychiatry using the software SPSS.
